As a general rule when two or more rivers meet at the confluence point: it is either the volume of water or length of the merging river that decides the name of the new river. However then why we see so many anomalies to this rule especially in ancient civilizations, surely a few can be explained by some old mythological reason, probably a few to some ignorance of those times but certainly not so many.
